Assuming your dog is pregnant with puppies; first of all, congratulations! 🎉 It is such an exciting time, but it can also be a bit confusing, especially when it is your first time. Don’t worry. Why not think of the guide as a chat, in which I will take you through all the steps one by one.
I still recall when my neighbour had her dog give birth to her first litter. The whole house got excited, and also nervous as we had no idea of what to expect. All passed off well with a word or two of advice, and that is just what I want of you, too.
We shall study the pregnancy of dogs in plain and straightforward terms.
What Is Dog Pregnancy?
Gestation, or dog being pregnant, normally takes 58 to 68 days (approximately 2 months). It is too short when compared to humans implying that things change very quickly.
That’s why it’s important to:
• Recognise the signs early
• Provide proper care
• Get ready the puppies.
Early Signs of Dog Pregnancy
At first it is not necessarily clear. Even dog owners do not notice the initial symptoms.
🐾 Weeks 1–3: Subtle Changes :
In the initial few weeks you can experience:
• Slight tiredness
• Less interest in play
• Mild change in appetite
• More loving or holding behaviour.
At other times there are no signs at all. There is no need to panic because your dog may look normal.
🐾Weeks 4–5: Clearer Signs Appear
Now things have come more into notice:
• Slight weight gain
• Nipples end up being larger and pinkish (so called pinking up).
• Belly begins to appear a little puffed up.
• There is clear discharge (it is normal)
By now, it is better to go to a vet and make sure.
🐾 Weeks 6–9: Final Stage
At this point, it is very clear that pregnancy does exist:
• Big, round belly
• Increased appetite
• Trying to make a safe place (nesting behaviour)
• Last week milk production.
You will find your dog chewing blankets, or huddling in corners--nature is getting ready to have her puppies.
How to Confirm Pregnancy..!
In case you do not know, do not theorise, but verify.
A veterinarian can:
• Do an ultrasound (around day 25)
• Perform an X-ray (after day 45) on puppies.
This further makes you more prepared.
Caring about a pregnant dog.
The most vital of these is the next, which is care.
Imagine it is as though you are following through a pregnant family member. Your dog should be given more attention, but not being pampered.
1. Proper Nutrition
Food contributes largely to the health of your dog and development of the puppies.
What to do:
• Feed high-quality dog food
• Then change to puppy food in the later stages (which contains more nutrition)
• Eat small portions of food more than once a day.
What to avoid:
• Overfeeding in early stages
• Human junk food
• Sudden diet changes
👉 One simple principle: Eat slowly, not fast.
2. Hydration
Always make sure:
• There is fresh and clean water.
• Bowl is easy to access
During pregnancy, dogs have an increased thirst with a preference to water consumption during the last weeks.
3. Exercise
Physical activity is good- however do not strain.
Safe activities:
• Short walks
• Light play
Avoid:
• Jumping
• Running too fast
• Rough play
I have also noticed that some people have completely given up on exercising, and they are not supposed to do that. Your dog also has to be moved, but not excessively.
4. Comfortable Environment
Your dog must have a calming environment to sleep in.
Create a space that is:
• Quiet
• Clean
• Warm
• Away from too many people
She will be uncomfortable in a lot of noise or stress.
5. Regular Vet Visits
Don’t skip vet check-ups.
A vet will:
• Monitor puppy development
• Check your dog’s health
• Guide you for delivery
Also, during pregnancy, do not administer drugs without veteran consultation.
⚪Getting ready to have a puppy (Very Important)
Don’t wait until the last day. Early preparation should be made.
Set Up a Whelping Box
Your dog will give birth in a safe place known as whelping box.
You can make one at home using:
• A cardboard box or wooden box
• Old towels or newspapers
• Soft bedding
Make sure:
• The mother can entered easily.
• Puppies cannot fall out
• It is kept in a warm area.
Checklist of Essential Supplies.
Keep these ready:
• Clean towels
• Sterilised scissors
• Gloves
• Heating pad or lamp
• Clean cloths
• Emerging veteran emergency call line number.
Believe me, when work begins you will have no time to seek things.
Signs of Labour
Labour would normally occur at about 60 days.
Stage 1: Preparation (6–12 hours)
• Restlessness
• Panting
• Refusing food
• Nesting behaviour
This is the phase that can be termed as getting ready.
Stage 2: Delivery
• Strong contractions
• Puppies start coming out
The birth of every puppy typically does not take more than 30 to 60 minutes.
Stage 3: Placenta
The placenta is expelled after giving birth to each puppy.
Don’t panic—this is normal.
When to Call the Vet in a Emergency.
The following scenarios require immediate solution:
• Powerful contractions and no puppies in 1 hour.
• Greater than 2-hour interval between puppies.
• Heavy bleeding.
• Extreme weakness.
When in doubt don’t hesitate, call your vet right away.
🔵After Birth Care
After puppies are born, this will not be your last duty. In fact, it’s just beginning!
Care for the Mother
• Give her water immediately
• Present light food after birth.
• Let her rest
• Keep her area clean
Watch for:
• Fever
• Weakness
• Loss of appetite
Care for the Puppies
Babies of puppies are very fragile.
Make sure:
• They begin feeding (the milk of the mother is not indifferent)
• They stay warm
• They are active
In case one of the puppies is weak or still not drinking, visit a vet.
🔴Common Mistakes to Avoid
Allow me a few things I have observed folks do wrong:
❌ Ignoring early signs
❌ Overfeeding too soon
❌ failing to prepare a whelping area.
❌ Self-prescription of drugs.
❌ Panicking during labour
The trick is not to panic and be ready.
🌕Some Hints of a Dispenser.
• You talk to your dog, she can feel your energy.
• Do not keep children during birth.
• Maintain hygiene always
• Have your mobile phone charged (in case of emergency)
And a personal suggestion, never leave your dog alone during labour. She feels better when you are around.
Final Thoughts ❤
Pregnancy in a dog is a wonderful experience. Sure it requires care and attention, but it is a joy. It is a memorable experience to watch little puppies being born and growing up.
Just remember to keep yourself ready, relaxed and well-informed, and things will work out.
