When you are a dog owner, I suppose you have argued yourself thick and thin, you are enjoying something good, and your pet is seated close to you, peering at you with those naive eyes. It’s hard to say no, right? I’ve been there too. There was a time when having a banana to eat, my dog followed me all along till I gave in and gave him a small piece. Fortunately, it became a safe decision!
However, there is one thing here, and that is, not every human food is safe to dogs. Some can even be harmful. Therefore, you should be aware of what you can post and what not to post.
In this paper, we will examine 10 human foods that are safe to dogs, in an easy and casual manner.
1. Carrots 🥕
Carrots make great snacks to dogs. They are crisp, a bit sweet and highly healthy.
They help in:
• Improving dental health
• Providing vitamins
• Supporting eye health
They should be given either raw or cooked but in small pieces because of the risk of choking.
2. Apples 🍎
Other safe and delicious ones are apples. Most of the dogs like the sweet and juicy taste.
Benefits include:
• Rich in fibre
• Good for digestion
• Helps freshen breath
Caution: Never feed without removing the seeds and the core.
3. Rice 🍚
Dogs digest plain cooked rice very easily. Actually, it is a recommendation of numerous vets as a dog has an upset stomach.
It helps:
• Calm digestion
• Provide energy
• Support recovery
Do not add salt, oil or spices.
4. Chicken 🍗
Dogs are fond of cooked chicken and it is a great source of protein.
You can:
• Mix it with rice
• Serve it plain
• Use it as a treat
Note: Never serve uncooked or over spiced chicken. More so, take away bones to avoid choking.
5. Peanut Butter 🥜
Some dogs like peanut butter. It’s tasty and full of protein.
Dogs enjoy:
• The creamy texture
• The rich flavour
But make sure:
• It has not xylitol (which is highly toxic to dogs) in it.
• You give it in small amounts
6. Bananas 🍌
It was the one I myself tried and experimented with my dog--and it was a success!
Bananas are:
• Rich in potassium
• Easy to digest
• Naturally sweet
They ought to be presented in small portions. In the event of excess, stomach upsets occur.
7. Pumpkin 🎃
Pumpkin is good to the digestive system of a dog.
It helps with:
• Constipation
• Diarrhoea
• Overall gut health
Plain cooked or canned pumpkin (sugar spices removed).
8. Eggs 🥚
Dogs can enjoy eggs, which is a protein-rich product.
They support:
• Muscle strength
• Healthy coat
• Overall energy
Eggs should be cooked, boiled or scrambled (with no spices and without oil).
9. Yogurt 🥛
Without additional flavour, yogurt can be a healthy snack to dogs.
It contains:
• Calcium
• Protein
• Good bacteria for digestion
Select unsweetened yogurt; be sure not to use any artificial flavours.
10. Cucumbers 🥒
Cucumbers are cool and also have fewer calories- ideal to dogs particularly during hot seasons.
They help:
• Keep dogs hydrated
• Provide a crunchy snack
• Support weight control
Cut them into tiny bits so as to eat.
Foods You Should NEVER Share ❌
The above foods are safe but other foods that humans consume are harmful to the dogs. Always avoid:
• Chocolate
• Grapes and raisins
• Onions and garlic
• Alcohol
• Caffeine
Again, it is better to consult a vet when there is a doubt.
Final Thoughts ❤
It is a cute experience to share your food with your dog. I can even recall the way my dog was so happy to receive that small bit of banana- it is in these little moments that make the parenting of pets special.
However, keep in mind that it is about moderation. Even non-hazardous foods are to be distributed in small amounts. The primary food of your dog should be balanced and appropriate to the needs of the dog.
